TourismAfrica2006: a strategic event for the future of African tourism |
![]() |
|

One of the most significant elements of Tourism Africa is the way that so many UN agencies have spontaneously agreed to support the initiative and to participate in the program.
As the central and decisive UN focal point for the sector, UNWTO is strongly committed to support this event and to help it contribute to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals.
The MDG´s give us a natural ten year strategic perspective for the exhibition as well as an annual check on performance.
As chair of the Tourism Africa Advisory Committee we are delighted to see already, in this first year, the high level of interest and participation of African Ministers of Tourism, as well as senior professionals from the industry, development agencies and the media.
It is an exciting start and we are indebted to SBM and Palexpo for their vision and innovation in conceptualizing and pulling the event together.
Geoffrey Lipman
Special Advisor to the UNWTO Secretary General

Sport also finds its place at TourismAfrica 2006, given that Africa has always shown its great sport potential. There is an inextricable link between the development of sport and tourism. The Africa Cup of Nations is one example of successful tourism events as it attracts thousands of visitors each edition.
Pape Diouf, Manager of the world known football club, Olympique de Marseille (OM) will chair a forum that will closely examine sports’ role in the development of tourism in Africa through the promotion of sport activities. Issues related to the promotion of sports activities as well as sports’ benefits on health and education will be discussed.
Famous figures such as Marcel Desailly, ex-captain of the French National Team and Jean François Jodart, the Malian national team coach will share their expertise. We will also have the honour to welcome the famous singer Francis Lalanne at this occasion. |
Exhibition of Traditional African Art : The Spirit of the Ancestors
The Africa Culture Center is proud to welcome in its area, a collection of traditional ancient African Art presented by Doctor Martin Sigam. The exhibition will take place on Tuesday September12th.
Some of the exhibited objects were created before Jesus Christ and find their origins in several countries such as Guinea, Ghana, Sierra Leone, Mali Democratic Republic of Congo and more. About a hundred of objects made of various materials (wood, clay, ivory, bronze, iron, basketwork, copper, bones, vegetal fibres, horns, skins, etc) will be displayed. We will see masks, statues and utensils carrying deep history. This exhibition witnesses the variety of the works, the functionality and the philosophy hidden in these African creations.
